CLIMATE EDUCATION DESIGN

Our Earth is suffering, something my generation (Z) has become so keenly aware of. Extreme weather and staggering statistics constantly appear on the news. Doomscrolling on social media doesn’t help either. And the generations above us don’t seem to care about helping us conserve the world that is our future. Corporations and governments are the main problem, but they’ve let the individual consumer feel at fault. We’re left feeling responsible for the great problems of the world and are encouraged to make vain attempts to cure it. Despite all this, I still have an optimistic belief in the power of the masses and the power of education. What if enough people learn what is happening and what needs to be done to stop it? What if enough people realize we need to take action? What if enough people do take action? What impact will that have? There’s only one way to find out.

During my time at university, I found my passion in designing informational publications for climate education. The very first zine I created about food waste and composting was the defining moment of my practice and everything that has come after it. I designed an educational card game about glacial loss and recirculated a text about the global commons, a term many people have never heard of. These three projects led to The Art of Climate Education, my senior thesis project, which combines this innate need to design for the conservation of our Earth, along with a general passion for art, research and education.

The Art of Climate Education

This book aims to use art as a catalyst for change. It is a collection of 75 works of art, primarily sculpture and installation based, that seek to educate viewers on climate change and environmental conservation. Ultimately, the goal is to encourage readers to learn about this topic in a new way and inspire them to take action by creating small tangible changes in their lifestyle to help protect our Earth.

200 pages. 8 x 10 inches. French link stitch binding.

Fix Your Food Waste

Our society has a problem with food waste, on both a small and large scale.
This zine addresses the problem as it exists in the individual consumer’s home.
The focus is on how to reduce food waste and promote composting.

5.5 x 8.5 inches. Risograph printed.

Did You Know Our Glaciers Are Melting?

Due to the exponential increase in global warming, glaciers have been exponentially decreasing in size. Multiple glaciers in the United States have even shrunk so much that they are no longe considered active glaciers. This has had a profound impact on our landscape and on our world that benefits from the presence of glaciers. The goal of this game is to spread awareness and educate players on the deteriorating status of our glaciers.
